Drugs in Sports

A drug used to increase blood production in both medical treatments and athletic doping scandals seems also to improve memory in those using it. New research shows that the memory enhancing effects of erythropoietin (EPO) are not related to its effects on blood production but due to direct influences on neurons in the brain.

Anabolic steoids are drugs that resemble testosterone, a hormone which is produced in the testes of males and, to a much lesser extent, in the ovaries of females. Testosterone is partially responsible for the developmental changes that occur during puberty and adolescence and is also involved in controlling the rates of buildup and breakdown of the main biochemical components of all tissues, including muscle. http://www.science.org.au/nova/055/055key.htm

Androstenedione was used by East German Olympic swimmers and other athletes in the 1970s and 1980s to improve their performances. It was banned by the International Olympic Committee in 1997, but is currently permitted by some other sporting bodies, such as Major League Baseball in the USA. Mark McGuire, who set a baseball home-run record in 1999, has admitted to using androstenedione Nandrolone was allegedly detected in a urine sample provided by British sprinter and Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie in 1999. http://www.science.org.au/nova/055/055key.htm

  1. Drugs? Sport? Is there any positive relation between these two?!!! I don’t think so!!! In my opinion taking drugs belongs to the weak people in the sense of mentally and physically. Educating the public to get the better clue on how drugs affect the metabolism of human body is the factor which must be prioritized by the authorities. In fact athletes who take drugs are belonging to the level of society that couldn’t digest the exact meaning of sports. They contribute in sports due to its financial and reputation benefits instead of the tacit meaning of it.

  2. In my opinion anything link with sport is illegal for drugs, any athletes can not taking drugs during their performance. If any athletes taking drugs during their performance it is just show to everybody that they do not have ability to perform and they do not trust them self to perform without any drugs help.

  3. Increase heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure and generally heighten the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. These drugs also affect the brain so that the athlete feels more alert, confident, and perhaps even euphoric. Consequently, psychomotor stimulants may lead to an improved athletic performance, more through their psychological than their physical effects; however, apart from increasing endurance, the benefits of these stimulants on athletic performance are limited.

  4. I am totally agree with what Mr Brad said. In my opinion, drugs never bring any positive relation. In fact, athletes cannot take drugs while they are completing with each others. It is unfair and illegal. People who take drugs are those who are weak in the sense of mentally and physically. In my opinion, a real athletes would not take drugs and those who are taking do not have the qualification to call themselves as athletes.

  5. Of course there are NO benefits of taking drugs in long term. However, using drugs to cheat in sports is not new,but it is becoming more effective.

    http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/drugsinsport.html

The reason most of the athletes take drugs is because it will help the athletes in sports by giving energy and strengh. However, these drugs will give bad effects after long term to their health. It also will make the athletes weaker and addicted to the drugs. Therefore,it is NEVER good taking drugs in sports. It is better to exercise and do more practises to improve yourself eventhough it may take more time to improve rather than taking drugs.

  6. No one person in the right frame of mind would agree with taking drugs. Moreover when our athletes who is suppose to be a role model to younger generations that looks highly upon them starts to take drugs. That is why drugs are never legalised from the first day until today. This is due to the bad effect that it gives in the long run to people who takes them. It is immoral for a sportsperson to consume drugs especially while competing for the reason of extra stamina. Yes, it is very unfair to the rest of the athletes that put their heart and soul to win the race without drugs. A race is always a fair game. This will bring down the sports industry if we have athletes that consumes drugs.

  7. Many illegal drugs have medicinal uses. Alcohol in moderation lessens the risk of heart disease. Heroin is the only painkiller effective for certain terminal diseases including cancers. Marijuana can halt the progress of glaucoma and combat nausea caused by chemotherapy or prescription drugs. MDMA (Ecstasy) showed promise for treating some psychological problems. All this if you are a normal person like you and me but for a sportsman or sportswoman taking drugs to boost their performance , then they are cowards is like they are taking the easy way out , kids look up to their sports idol more than they look up to their parents , and for sportsman or sportswoman to take drugs it would be a very bad influence to children!

  8. Drugs and sports have no relationship in any way. drugs are a negative ingredient to the game. Athlets take drugs (not marijuana or weed) to increase performance. That is cheating, because sports is about excelling in your natural talent.

  10. Well, talking about the benefit of drug, from the view point of athletes who consumes drugs it is beneficial, but in sports, doping refers to the use of performance-enhancing drugs, particularly to those who are forbidden by organizations that regulate competitions. Athletes generally prefer doping to improve their athletic performance. This is why many sports ban the use of performance enhancing drugs as it would be unfair to the other competitors. Another form of doping is blood doping, either by blood transfusion or use of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO). Doping is considered unethical by most international sports organizations and especially the International Olympic Committee. The reasons are mainly the health threat of performance-enhancing drugs, the equality of opportunity of the athletes and the exemplary effect of "clean" (doping-free) sports in the public.

    Reasons Some Athletes Use Drugs
Athletes face enormous pressure to excel in competition. They also know that winning can reap them more than a gold medal. A star athlete can earn a lot of money and a lot of fame, and athletes only have a short time to do their best work. Athletes know that training is the best path to victory, but they also get the message that some drugs and other practices can boost their efforts and give them a shortcut, even as they risk their health and their athletic careers.
As far back as ancient Greece, athletes have often been willing to take any preparation that would improve their performance. But it appears that drug use increased in the 1960s. One well-publicized incident happened at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 when sprinter Ben Johnson tested positive for anabolic steroids and was stripped of his gold medal. Athletes may also misuse drugs to relax, cope with stress or boost their own confidence.
Athletes may have several reasons for using performance-enhancing drugs. An athlete may want to:
    • Build mass and strength of muscles and/or bones
    • Increase delivery of oxygen to exercising tissues
    • Mask pain
    • Stimulate the body
    • Relax
    • Reduce weight
    • Hide use of other drugs

    Health and fitness:-

Well, Amit this is a good to discuss about probably the most important thing in live is good health. Without good health we may experience debilitating diseases and an unnecessarily short life span. It's fairly easy to achieve good health, but it involves certain changes in our life style which are sometimes difficult to do at first. But it can be made possible by starting it slowly and by making small changes at first. There are several ways to achieve good health and one of the most important facets of good health is adequate exercise. Exercises help us achieve good health by strengthening our cardio-vascular system, strengthening our muscle mass and reducing the affect of stress on the body. Opposite to that there are some aspects which can affect our health such as poor eating habits. Healthy eating is very important in achieving and maintaining good health. Including poor eating habits excessive smoking or drinking is certainly detrimental to our good health. Here I would like to oppose Nella and Ellyn’s earlier comments that a little bit of everything will not harm our body, it’s okay to occasionally imbibe, a few drinks once in a while are fine, and small amounts of red wine are actually good for you, but there is no such exception for smoking. As a study in a Chicago University (Illinois) is founded out that exposure to prolonged puffing can perk up levels of a stress hormone in the heart which potentially reshape the left ventricle and deface our heart. So sooner one quits smoking, the faster the body can begin to repair the years of damage.

  11. Well Saddam your question is, is there any benefit in taking drugs?. If there was no benefit in it we wont be talking about it now or at first place no one would have used it in any sport and disqualified if used. Drugs and Drugs used by athletes are different as my friend Nimesh clearly stated it out above. (thanks mate).
Being a professional athelete is not easy and maintaining your high standards mostly. So athlete try to cheat and take in so called performance enhancing drugs to win a gold medal and wish that they are not caught. This is unfair to the rest of the athlete competing with them because its not his own excellence or natural talent. With the emergence of technology its impossible to be not caught using these drugs even though many athletes still try to do it.

  12. Some of my friends think that drugs don’t have any linkage with sports but I am sorry to say to my friends that drug have some linkage with sports. I know this is not good for health but some sportsmen are suspended in different category of sports from past age of sports. As we all know Football legend “Diago Maradona” was suspended during the world cup at 1994 for the positive results of drugs and recently worlds former fastest pace bowler was also suspended for taking drugs. Recently in Athletics some sportsmen also suspended for having drugs. So my friends I hope now you got some information and relation of drugs in sports. By the way Saddam you pointed a good topic in your blog.
